Oh My! It’s a Jungle Out There

Make Order

Today I got started looking around the blog and realizing that I had better create some order in my posts, in addition to the categories. I then created a “TOP 100 Post” for just about all the important elements at Rich Sage dot com. My plan is to take the 13 or so posts and keep adding content to them until I have around 20 to 25 links. Then I will publish them in a TOP 100 List as my next theme update goes live.

To create the top 100 I spent a bit of time looking at the important posts at the Warrior Forum. These are posts at the forum that have gotten the most views. I’ve duplicated much of that in my posts, as it’s obvious that this is the type of content that readers want. For example, “business credit building” is of huge interest to readers. So is a “21-Step Plan to Get Started Online” and “TOP 100 WordPress World” which links to plugins and WordPress tips that bloggers cannot live with out.

My great ideas for increasing readers…

At the same time I looked into new ideas on how to increase my readership. The primary way readers are finding me is via directly connection to the site. Obviously, they remember me. The next way is via searches and lastly, from RSS feeds, which I have neglected to do something to increase the reader base.

WordPress Plugin to Increase RSS Readers:

Increase RSS Feed Readers

Today I focused on posts and a little re-tooling to increase my reader base. I found this plugin by Richard Miller with a strange name — What Would Seth Godin Do? Well, what he would do is to prompt new readers to subscribe to the RSS Feeds.

This is how the RSS Feed Reader Subscriber Prompt works:

Increase RSS Feed Readers

  • It uses cookies to note that this is your first visit.
  • It then displays the above message that I have highlighted. I actually changed the message to say “should” subscribe vs. the default message that said you “may add”… Exact directions work better.
  • The plugin also gives you the ability to display the message at the top or bottom of the post. I picked the top, because I’ve limited the number of times it’s seen and I need to give the request maximum exposure.
  • The other customization, as I said above, is to limit the number of times the message is seen. I’ve limited it to three times –when a new visitor arrives a cookie is deposited. And for 3 consecutive visits the “subscribe” message is displayed.

Perhaps, the only drawback that I can see in the plugin design is that it uses cookies to do the work. Then again, there is no other way for it to proceed without using cookies. I think this is a wonderful plugin to greatly increase your RSS readership!

Carpe Diem, Rich Sage
