Perfect FTP Client FileZilla 3.0 and It’s FREE

Category: MY REVIEWS

FileZilla is the Perfect FTP Client and It’s FREE

Filezilla FTP Program

For 3 years I’ve used FileZilla, an FTP Client (File Transfer Protocol), that transfers pictures, images, files, etc. from my pc to the server where it is published.  For example, the screen shot next to this was made in Gimp, saved as a .gif file and transferred to the server using FileZilla.

Here is a partial list of what Filezilla can do:

  • Supports FTP, FTP over SSL/TLS (FTPS) and SSH File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
  • Cross-platform. Runs on Windows, Linux, *BSD, OSX and more
  • Supports resume and transfer of large files >4GB
  • Powerful Site Manager and transfer queue
  • Drag & drop support
  • It also creates a XML data file that keeps all the connection info for all the sites that I manage.  The list is easily backed up, thus can be transferred to any pc or when a pc is upgraded.

What I find difficult to believe is the cost: FREE.  This is another exception where a free program delivers what it promises AND it works.

I use it to do general FTP tasks as well as editing PHP files on the server.  It has a feature that downloads and opens a file in my editor. Then I save the file and close it. Filezilla prompts me to upload it to the server automatically, and when I say “yes” the old file is replaced by the new one on the server.

Filezilla is great, I use it for all my FTP stuff, but recently I’ve tried using “Directory Opus” which is a file browser alternative to Windows Explorer. It has a built in http://FTP.
