Rich Sage Upgrade April 2008

Category: BRAND BUILDING, ONLINE SUCCESS

The Rich Sage is growing rapidly…

Rich Sage Universe When I started my wise posts, I had just a lone account hosted on a virtual hosting server. I was on a VPS. As part of my traffic building strategy, I moved the Rich Sage dot com to a back up hosting server that I had. It’s not fast, it was just a basic server that I could use.  As part of that strategy I extended the registration for the Sage several years and pointed an IP address to RichSage dot com.  Then I started my traffic building.

However, there were some limitations –the hosting only allowed one domain and only one email address.  That was part of my back-up server limitations.

Now I need to prepare a server for the following advances:

  • Brand new three-column Wordpress theme
  • Reaching 1,000 visits per day
  • Averaging 25,000 hits per day
  • Running several sub-domains
  • And several domains
  • Running a gallery area & forum
  • Running my normal free membership
  • Creating content for a paid membership
  • Upgrade to Wordpress 2.5

More server upgrade wisdom & benefits of Wordpress 2.5 …

All this takes tremendous computing power and I feel much better when the setup is running on new equipment. I have now requested a XEON dual processor powered Linux server with 4 Gig Ram and a pair of SCSI drives. I usually use SCSI drives that run RAID 1, which creates a constant backup to the main hard drive. Of course, that too is backed up daily to the back up server.

My other upgrade this time around is to WordPress 2.5, which has a whole host of features that I cannot wait to use:

  • Multi-file uploading –overall, better FTP file uploads
  • One-click plug-in upgrades –this I cannot believe but I look forward to this automation
  • Built-in galleries –I will be able to use this feature to help support my Rich Sage Diva girls, who people will be able to vote on a monthly basis. Don’t worry ladies –I’ll have a guy area with Rich Sage Prodigies.
  • Customizable dashboard –That’s not a big one, but welcome. Any improvement is OK.
  • Media library –Now it sounds like a full operating system running. Still any improvement to make management of media better is welcome.
  • And an all-new design that’s easier to use than ever before –Sure, again all improvements are welcome. Simply put, the Wordpress 2.5 upgrades takes advantage of web2.0 looks and functions.

Overall the expense for the hosting went from $5.95 per month, to the simple dedicated server at $99.00 per month to the next generation XEON server which I get at a discount for $300 per month. Now the question is did I do all this while generating revenue and the answer is “Yes!”

I don’t advocate accelerating your business expenses when revenue is non-existent or going down. I have followed my own advice and monetized using several local strategies. That is paying off very nicely, and I feel that the time to make upgrades is now, before the strain on the current server keeps increasing.

Carpe Diem,

Rich Sage
